The Three-Phase Move
Every move, however big, is three phases: prepare, move, settle. Nail each and the whole thing stays calm.
Phase 1: Prepare
- Book your removal team at least three weeks ahead for a weekend.
- Declutter — sell or donate what you don't use. You move less and pay less.
- Start packing the least-used rooms first (see the full checklist).
- Take a meter reading at your current home and tell your provider.
Phase 2: Move Day
- Have a labelled essentials box ready — kettle, chargers, meds, a change of clothes.
- Be present to walk the crew through heavy items and fragile bits.
- Ask the crew to put boxes in the right rooms — it saves you hours.
- Leave valuables and paperwork with you, not the van.
Phase 3: Settle
- Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first — everything else can wait.
- Read both meters and photograph them.
- Set up the boiler, wifi and security before you collapse.
- Redirect your post for 12 months.
What Most People Get Wrong
Packing too late. The single biggest source of stress on move day is a family still packing while the crew waits. Aim to be fully packed by the night before — the crew arrives to a done job, and the day becomes almost pleasant.
