8 Weeks Out
- Book your removal team early — popular dates go fast.
- Get three quotes, compare like-for-like, and check insurance cover.
- Start decluttering room by room. Sell, donate or bin — don't pay to move it.
6 Weeks Out
- Book a skip or bulky waste collection for the big stuff you're not taking.
- Request valuation/redirection for any specialist items like pianos — see our piano guide.
- Arrange schools, nurseries and dentist/GP transfer letters.
- Order packing materials (or book our packing service).
4 Weeks Out
- Book a moving-in date with your new utility suppliers (gas, electric, water, broadband).
- Notify the council for council tax at both properties.
- Start packing the rooms you use least — loft, garage, spare rooms.
- Update your address with banks, cards, insurers and subscriptions.
2 Weeks Out
- Book the van, confirm the crew arrival time and finalise your inventory.
- Arrange parking permits or temporary road suspension if you need them.
- Take final meter readings at your old property.
- Pack your "essentials box" — kettle, mugs, toiletries, phone chargers, keys.
1 Week Out
- Defrost the freezer and empty the fridge.
- Finish dismantling anything you're handling yourself (or book dismantling).
- Separate what must NOT be packed — valuables, paperwork, medicine.
- Confirm keys/access arrangements with both agents or sellers.
Move Day
- Label every box by room before the crew arrives.
- Be present to walk the team through heavy or fragile items.
- Keep the essentials box with you, in the car.
- Lock up, then check you have all keys before you leave.
After the Move
- Read both meters and photograph the readings.
- Redirect your post with the Royal Mail redirect service.
- Register at your new GP and update vehicle/V5C documents.
- Change locks if you're moving into a previously-owned home.
Follow this and move day becomes surprisingly calm. If you'd rather have professionals handle the heavy lifting, request a fixed quote — or call 0121 679 2511.
